Cougle Commission Company was founded in 1873 by four Cougle
brothers on the Old South Water St. In 1900, Louis E. Freidheim
the Grandfather of the current corporate president Louis E.
Freidheim, joined the company as its bookkeeper and correspondent.
The firm was incorporated in 1923. Two years later, the establishment
moved from South Water Street to Randolph Street, which was at the
time the dry grocery and fresh fruit and vegetable wholesale center
for the central part of the city. L.Edgar Freidheim, father of the
current president and vice-president, joined the company in 1931, and
was elected president in 1959. The last of the four Cougle brothers
died in 1928 and, since 1945, members of the Freidheim family have
been the company's only shareholders.
Until 1938, the company functioned on a farmers commission basis;
handling direct shipments of live poultry, veal, vegetables, eggs,
etc. This prduce was shipped to the company by rail or boat and later
by truck from farmers and small produce dealers in the Midwestern
region. In 1938, Cougle became primarily a poultry house, adopting
its current logo, a "spread-eagle" chicken with a big "C" on its breast.
In 1967, the firm took on red meat. The current U.S.D.A. inspected
facility built 1979 on an acre of land, was expanded in 1984. The
processing facilities were expanded in 1995 which included automated
equipment for sizing and sorting boneless breast meat. Cougle has 2
processing coolers for a cutting and boning; 2 holding coolers that can
store up to 10 truckloads at one time and Freezer with a storage capacitiy
for 20 truckloads.
Today this plant processes 500,000 lbs. per week of custom cut chicken
and chicken parts, boned chicken breast and boned leg meat. Cougle
distributes products to the hotel, restaurant and institution industries,
and has extensive experience with the national and local multi-unit chain
operations. EXCELLENT quality and service is the company standard.
